The short answer: Do not leave after merely confirming that the device turns on. Compare the handover report with the work performed, inspect the casing, and test both the repaired component and any functions that had to be disconnected during disassembly. Test sign-in, biometrics, and company apps yourself; do not give the repair shop your password.
Start with the paperwork, not the display
Make sure the final report identifies the specific device, the work performed, the part used, the price, the date, and the repair shop’s warranty terms. If the diagnostic inspection found anything else, ask the shop to distinguish between what was actually repaired and what remains only a recommendation.
The part description should match the approved quote. „Genuine,„ „used genuine," „refurbished,„ and „compatible" are not the same. For a supported device, also ask what should appear in the system’s service history and whether the necessary configuration has been completed.
A quick physical inspection
In good light, compare the intake photographs with the device’s current condition. Check for gaps around the display, casing, and connectors, new scratches, a loose port, and whether the device sits flat on a table. Do not press down on the casing or display if it is lifting.
Bring your own adapter, cable, or Apple Pencil if it was related to the original fault. A successful test using the repair shop’s verified accessories does not necessarily prove that your cable or dock is working correctly.
Ten minutes well spent
Collecting the device does not need to become an exam. Simply work through five steps in the right order, as each one builds on the previous step:
- Report versus quote. Do the work, part, and price match? Resolve any discrepancy now, not later by email.
- Appearance and mechanical condition. Gaps, whether it sits flat, a loose port, or a lifting casing.
- The repaired component. Test the reason you brought the device in—and test it thoroughly, not with a single tap.
- The area around the repair. Check anything that had to be disconnected during disassembly: the camera, microphone, sensors, buttons, and speaker.
- Your sign-in. Biometrics, account access, two-factor authentication, and company apps—test these yourself.
If something is wrong at step 3 or 4, stop and have it recorded. In practice, there is a crucial difference between „it was already like this at handover„ and „I came back with it a week later."
Tests by type of repair
| Repaired component | What to test on site |
|---|---|
| iPhone or iPad display | touch response across the entire surface, brightness, colours, automatic brightness, rotation |
| battery | stable charging, displayed battery status, unusual heat |
| camera | close-range and distant focusing, image stability, flash, video, and audio |
| USB-C, Lightning, or MagSafe | your own cable, gentle movement of the connector, charging, and supported data transfer |
| keyboard or trackpad | every key, clicking, gestures, and backlighting |
| MacBook display | brightness, backlighting, camera, microphone, and behaviour when changing the lid angle |
Do not test the device with a lengthy benchmark. The purpose is to verify the original symptom and nearby functions, not to place the device under unnecessary load.
What to check on specific models
Features differ between generations, so „check the ports" means something different on each device. Test what your particular model actually has:
| Product line and model | Additional checks |
|---|---|
| MacBook Air M1 2020, MacBook Pro 13″ M1 2020 (A2338) | test both USB-C ports separately for charging and data transfer; check the keyboard, trackpad, and backlighting |
| MacBook Air M2 2022 | test charging through both MagSafe and USB-C; check brightness and the uniformity of a white image across the entire display |
| MacBook Pro 14″ and 16″ 2021 (M1 Pro / M1 Max) | test every port separately—MagSafe 3, USB-C, HDMI, and the card reader—plus the camera and microphones |
| Intel-based MacBook Pro models from 2016–2019 | test every key separately, the Touch Bar and Touch ID, and the trackpad across its entire surface |
| iPhone 12 and later | Face ID, touch response across the entire surface including the edges, front and rear cameras, speakers, and wireless charging |
| iPad 9th generation (A2602/A2604) | Lightning connector, Touch ID in the Home button, and touch response in the corners and along the bezel |
| iPad 10th generation (A2696/A2757) | USB-C connector, Touch ID in the top button, and touch response in the corners and along the bezel |
Poor alignment on iPads and iPhones usually shows up first along the edges and in the corners—precisely the areas you do not normally touch when unlocking the device. Test those corners deliberately.
Features the owner must verify
Face ID, Touch ID, the Apple Account, banking apps, password managers, and company MDM must be checked by the owner or an authorised administrator. The repair shop may prepare the test, but it should not record the device passcode or any passwords. In its instructions for preparing an iPhone or iPad for service, Apple explicitly recommends that users never share security information; if entering the passcode is necessary for software support, the user should remain present.
On a company device, check its connection to MDM, VPN, and Wi-Fi only after completing the basic hardware test. If something does not work, first determine whether the cause is the hardware or a management policy. A repair technician should not bypass company security.
Service history differs between models
Depending on the iPhone model and operating system, the Parts and Service History section may display information about a replaced component. Apple has introduced a similar Parts & Service section for supported Macs with Apple silicon running macOS Tahoe 26 or later. If you cannot see this option in the system, that alone neither proves nor rules out an earlier repair; availability depends on the supported model, operating system, and type of work performed.
There is no need to look for this section on an Intel-based MacBook Pro from 2018. On a newer Mac with Apple silicon, however, it is worth checking immediately upon collection and photographing any entry together with the service report.
If the device fails a test
Describe the specific discrepancy: „the right third of the touchscreen does not respond„ is more useful than „the display is bad." Have the finding added to the report and agree on the next step before taking the device away. A new problem is not necessarily related to the repair, but it must first be documented.
If the device is swelling, smells unusual, becomes abnormally hot, or the port sparks, stop testing immediately. Do not try charging it again at home.
What to take home
In addition to the device, take three things: a photograph of the completed report, clearly written repair warranty terms—separately for the part and the labour—and the date. If the fault returns in a month, these records make the difference between a documented warranty claim and a discussion about what actually happened.
It is also useful to note which accessories you used to test the device. If the problem occurs only with one particular cable or dock, that is valuable information, not a minor detail.
Handover and inspection in Brno
ITHOPE provides out-of-warranty Apple repairs in Brno on a pilot basis and is not an Apple Authorised Service Provider. You approve the scope and price after diagnosis; when you collect the device, we will guide you through the functions that can be safely tested without sharing passwords. We do not offer data recovery from mobile phones.
If you are unsure what to test on your particular model, call 774 777 774 before collection—we will go through it with you so that you know exactly what to check on site and do not have to return later.
Frequently asked questions
What should I test on an iPhone 13 after a display replacement?
Test touch response across the entire surface, including the edges, as well as brightness and automatic brightness, Face ID, the front and rear cameras, the earpiece speaker during a call, and proximity detection when you raise the phone to your ear. You—not the technician—should test Face ID and sign-in.
Do I have to provide my passcode or password for testing?
No. We can go through tests that require the device to be unlocked together while you are present. Permanent passwords should never be shared.
How much time should I allow for collection?
Ten to fifteen minutes is more than enough. That is considerably less time than a second trip to the repair shop would take.
Must a fault appear immediately to qualify for a warranty claim?
No. However, an issue recorded in the report at handover is incomparably easier to resolve than one described from memory a month later.
