How Apple Device Diagnostics and Repair Approval Work

The short answer: Device check-in, diagnostics, the quotation, and the repair itself are four separate steps. Before any paid work begins, you should know the diagnosed fault, the proposed part, any limitations of the outcome, and the price. Agreeing to diagnostics should not automatically mean agreeing to any repair. ITHOPE is an independent out-of-warranty repair service in Brno and is not an Apple Authorised Service Provider.

1. Check-in records the device’s initial condition

The intake report should state the exact model, visible damage, supplied accessories, and the reported symptom. For an intermittent fault, a video and information about when it occurs can help. The repair shop should not record your Apple Account, online banking, or corporate email password.

The exact model is not a mere formality. „13-inch MacBook Pro 2020„ refers to two entirely different machines—the Intel-based model from the spring and the M1 model from the autumn (A2338)—with different procedures and compatible parts. The „9th-generation iPad" and „10th-generation iPad" look almost identical in a case, but they are different devices with different connectors and different Touch ID locations. The more precisely the device is identified at check-in, the less diagnostic time is spent determining what is actually on the workbench.

For a device under warranty or with active coverage, start with the retailer, Apple Support, or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. ITHOPE only accepts out-of-warranty repairs and is not an Apple Authorised Service Provider.

2. Diagnostics verify the cause, not just the symptom

„Not charging„ could mean the cable, connector, battery, or power circuitry. „The display does not work" could mean the glass, display panel, touch layer, cable, or logic board. Diagnostics therefore compare the device using known-good accessories, record its behaviour, and only then determine the scope of the problem.

Even for its own out-of-warranty repairs, Apple states that the product must be inspected before a personalised estimate can be provided. The same principle applies to an independent repair shop: the exact model and reported symptom allow for a preliminary estimate, not a final price.

Good diagnostics also state what could not be verified. Devices damaged by liquid or a previous unprofessional repair often have more than one fault, with the second only becoming apparent after the first has been resolved. This belongs in the diagnostic report beforehand, not in an excuse afterwards.

What diagnostics most commonly distinguish for each product line

Product line and modelWhat diagnostics must distinguish
MacBook Air M1 2020 and 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 2020 (A2338)for „not charging": the adapter, cable, USB-C port, battery, and the logic board’s power circuitry
14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro 2021 (M1 Pro / M1 Max)MagSafe 3 charging versus USB-C charging, the display assembly, and behaviour with an external monitor
MacBook Air M2 2022a display panel fault versus a fault in the complete lid assembly and cabling
Intel-based MacBook Pro models from 2016–2019the keyboard in the top case, Touch Bar, temperatures, and battery condition as four separate issues
iPhone 12 and laterthe glass, display panel, touch layer, sensors along the top edge, and logic board
9th-generation iPad (A2602/A2604) and 10th-generation iPad (A2696/A2757)cracked glass versus the touch layer and display, as well as frame deformation

The table is neither a price list nor a list of the faults your device actually has. It simply shows why the procedure differs for two devices described with the same phrase, „it won’t charge"—and why a repair shop quoting a fixed price from a photo is really just guessing.

3. The quotation must be clear

The quotation should includeWhy it matters
diagnosed faultdistinguishes the findings from the original estimate
exact part and its origin„OEM quality" is not an unambiguous designation
labour and related workshows the full scope, not just the price of the part
final testspecifies what will be verified after the repair
procedure for additional findingsprevents automatic price increases without approval
price and repair warranty termsenables a meaningful comparison of the options

If further damage is discovered after opening the device, the original approval is not sufficient. The repair shop should stop work, document the finding, and request a new decision.

Agreeing to diagnostics is not agreeing to a repair

This is where most misunderstandings arise. The following three steps should remain separate even if they all take place on the same day:

  • Diagnostics identify the cause and scope of the problem. The output is a diagnostic report and quotation, not a completed repair.
  • Approval means that a specific person has approved a specific scope, a specific type of part, and a specific amount.
  • Repair covers the approved scope—and nothing more.

The approval should remain traceable: an email, ticket, or signed report. A verbal „go ahead" over the phone without specifying the scope is disadvantageous to both parties, because a week later no one will remember exactly what was approved.

When diagnostics reveal a second fault

This procedure should be agreed in advance rather than improvised when the fault is found:

  1. work is stopped at a stage that can be documented;
  2. the finding is described and photographed;
  3. you receive options, not just a new price—including the option to have the device returned in its current condition;
  4. work continues only after new approval is given.

Clarify the opposite situation as well. If opening the device reveals that less work is required, the price should also decrease. And if the originally proposed part turns out not to make sense for that model, you should receive a new quotation rather than having another part substituted without your knowledge.

4. Repair and final testing

After the repair, testing should not be limited to the replaced component. After an iPhone display replacement, it makes sense to test touch response across the entire surface, brightness, sensors, and cameras. After work on a MacBook’s power system, charging stability, ports, and battery behaviour should be checked. On a 10th-generation iPad, touch response should also be tested along the edges and in the corners, where poor alignment may become apparent. You can test functions that require unlocking together with the technician when collecting the device, without sharing your password.

Newer models may also require a configuration step within the device’s operating system to complete the repair. Ask in advance whether your model requires such a step, who will perform it, and what the system should display afterwards.

The return report should state the work performed, the part used, the price, the test result, and any limitations. Photographs taken before and after the repair are particularly helpful for devices that already have several older areas of damage.

When the fault does not occur at the repair shop

An intermittent fault is a legitimate diagnostic outcome, not a failure—typically with MacBooks that restart only under load or iPhones whose touch input freezes once every two days. This should be followed by a written record of what was tested and for how long, together with an agreement on a longer observation period. Randomly replacing a part „just in case" is not a diagnosis: you pay for the component while the problem remains.

What the customer decides

Diagnostics may also conclude with a recommendation not to repair the device. With a deformed frame, corrosion, or several concurrent faults, the cost and uncertainty may approach the value of a replacement device. A good quotation does not conceal this option, even if the repair shop earns nothing from it.

The decision is always yours. The repair shop’s job is to provide the information you need: what is faulty, what can be done about it, what will remain uncertain, and how much it will cost.

Frequently asked questions

Will you accept an iPhone 13 Pro with a flickering display after a drop for diagnostics?

We will accept an iPhone 13 Pro for diagnostics. Only an inspection can determine whether the fault is limited to the display assembly or involves damage underneath it—we cannot promise part availability, price, or completion time in advance.

Do I need to know the A-number model identifier when making an enquiry?

No, but it helps. For MacBooks, the product line, screen size, year, and chip type are sufficient. For iPads, the A-number is practically the only reliable way to distinguish the generation.

Can I decline the repair if I do not like the quotation?

Yes. Agreeing to diagnostics is not agreeing to a repair. You will receive the device back in its documented condition together with the diagnostic report.
