
Quick answer
The short answer: Do not ask, „Is my Mac still supported?" Find out two specific things instead: exactly which model you have and which macOS version Apple lists as the last one compatible with it. Apple provides this information for every model on its identification pages and publishes a list of computers supported by the current operating system. Losing access to major new releases does not mean the device has reached the end of its life—older releases generally continue to receive security updates for some time. Replace the Mac when it no longer meets your applications’ requirements or your company’s security policies, not on the day a new operating system is released.
Check first—do not rely on a forum list
Forum lists claiming that „macOS X supports models A, B, and C" become outdated within months and often mix up generations that look identical. A reliable check always involves three steps:
- Find out which macOS version you are currently running. Open the Apple menu → About This Mac. Apple also provides a dedicated guide.

- Find the model on Apple’s identification page („Identify your MacBook Pro model„ or „Identify your MacBook Air model"). Each model has a line specifying the compatible operating system.
There is one useful detail that lets you read the answer without guessing. Apple uses two different phrases:
- „Newest compatible operating system" — the model runs the current major release. It has not yet reached its limit.
- „Last compatible operating system" — the model cannot upgrade to a newer major release. Its limit has been set.
One word gives you the whole answer. If you are buying a Mac or deciding whether to repair one, always check this line directly on Apple’s website.
What this looks like for specific MacBooks

Notice two things. First, the release year alone is not decisive. A 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2020 may top out at macOS Sequoia or run macOS Tahoe 26, depending on whether it has two or four Thunderbolt 3 ports. Second, the transition to Apple silicon is not the support boundary. The models compatible with macOS Tahoe 26 still include Intel-based machines: the 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2019, the 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2020 with four ports, the 27-inch iMac Retina 5K from 2020, and the 2019 Mac Pro.
The table is a snapshot, not a promise. When the next major release arrives, some of these entries will change—and Apple’s website is the only definitive source.
What actually stops and what keeps working
End of support is often discussed as though it happens all at once. In reality, it consists of three separate events that occur years apart.
1. The model drops off the list for a new major release. The new macOS version cannot be installed on it. The Mac continues running the last version it received, and nothing changes on that particular day.
2. Older releases continue to receive security updates for some time. In practice, this looked as follows in August 2026: during the same period, Apple released security updates for macOS Tahoe 26.6.x and the two preceding releases—macOS Sequoia 15.7.9 and macOS Sonoma 14.8.9—as well as Safari 26.6.1 for macOS Sonoma and macOS Sequoia. A Mac that „did not get the new version" therefore remains patched for some time.
3. Once the patches stop as well, the Mac runs without vulnerability fixes. This is the genuinely risky stage, and it arrives considerably later than the day the model drops off the compatibility list.
One important limitation: Apple does not make a binding commitment about how long this second stage will last. Nobody can honestly promise you „another three years of patches"—including us. What you can do is monitor Apple’s security releases page and check whether your macOS release still appears among the latest updates.
The other countdown few people know about: Rosetta
Apple silicon Macs have another timeline that is often confused with operating system support. Rosetta translates applications built for Intel so they can run on Apple silicon. Apple states that Rosetta will remain available in the upcoming macOS 27, the next major macOS release, and that starting with macOS 28, Rosetta functionality will be limited to certain older, unmaintained games that depend on Intel-based frameworks.
For businesses, this creates a specific task: check whether any applications, plugins, or extensions still exist only in an Intel version. This is not a problem affecting old Macs—it affects new Macs running old software and must be resolved with the application vendor, not at a repair shop.
What end of support means in practice
Making a decision based solely on the statement „it is no longer supported" is too simplistic. What matters is exactly what will stop working for you:
- Web browser. Safari receives new versions on systems that remain within the update window. Once your macOS version also drops out of security releases, the browser remains frozen at its last version, along with its support for newer web standards. This is typically the first thing users notice—when a website suddenly „breaks."
- Online banking and government services. Banking and identity applications set their own minimum operating system and browser requirements, which are often stricter than Apple’s. In practice, this is the most common reason an otherwise functional Mac stops being sufficient.
- Security. Without patches, known vulnerabilities remain unfixed—and once disclosed, the resulting danger increases abruptly rather than gradually. This is not about perception but a real risk that grows over time.
- Company policies. If an internal policy requires „devices running a current operating system only," the decision has already been made, regardless of the hardware’s condition.
- Specialist software. Accounting systems, VPN clients, security agents, CAD tools, and graphics applications set their own requirements, which often advance faster than those of the operating system.
What losing access to major releases does not mean is that the Mac will break, slow down, stop reading your files, or stop printing.
When replacement makes sense—and when it does not

A second life: a single-purpose machine
A MacBook that no longer receives major new releases is still a working computer. Sensible ways to extend its useful life include:
- One task, no web browsing. A workshop counter terminal, a computer connected to a scanner, a laptop for measuring equipment, or a meeting-room media player.
- No sensitive data or company accounts. Sign out of email, cloud services, and password managers—moving the data is cheaper than protecting it on an unpatched device.
- On an isolated network or offline. An unpatched system belongs on a guest network, not alongside the accounting system.
- As a home computer for writing and photos, it may remain useful for years, provided you understand that you should not use it to access online banking.
On the other hand, an unpatched Mac used to read company email and open attachments from strangers is not a saving. It is merely a deferred cost.
Before you decide
Write down three details: the exact model and identifier, the macOS version currently installed, and the operating system Apple lists as compatible with that model. For every critical application, add the system version it requires. With this information in front of you, the decision takes five minutes; without it, you are merely debating impressions.

Will my MacBook stop working when it no longer gets a new macOS release?

They look identical from the outside, but the number of ports and the model identifier make the difference.
Is it worth waiting for the next macOS release before deciding what to do with an older Mac?
No. Waiting will not change anything—Apple publishes the compatibility list for each release, and older models are not added retroactively. Base your decision on what you need to run now, not on what might possibly arrive later.
