Why choose ITHOPE for data recovery?

The most valuable assets today are data and information. It could be your company’s know-how, research data, your cryptocurrency wallet, or family pictures from the last vacation. Most of them are priceless and very important — so you have a serious problem when you can’t access them anymore.

Professional data recovery is the way out. We have been getting data back to life for more than 18 years. Thanks to professional equipment (PC-3000, DeepSpar, clean room, proprietary imaging tools), we are capable of diagnosing the source of the problem and proposing a realistic solution, so you can access all your data — or as much as technically possible.

Before we start the recovery process, we put your disk through a deep damage diagnostic for free, and we agree on all further steps together. Your data is our top priority. We follow the ethical code of data recovery: maximum discretion, encrypted storage of recovered data, and NDA on request.

What we recover

We perform hardware data recovery from:

  • Internal and external HDDs — Samsung, Toshiba, Seagate, Western Digital, HGST, Hitachi, Maxtor
  • SSDs — Samsung, Intel, Kingston, Crucial, Micron, WD, SanDisk, Phison-based OEM drives
  • USB flash drives and memory cards — CompactFlash, SD, SDHC, SDXC, microSD, XQD, CFexpress
  • Mobile phones and tablets — Android, iPhone (iOS), Windows Phone, MTK-based devices
  • RAID arrays — RAID 0/1/5/6/10, hardware and software, Synology SHR, QNAP, Netgear ReadyNAS
  • Virtualized systems — VMware VMDK, Hyper-V VHDX, KVM qcow2
  • Encrypted volumes with recovery key — BitLocker, FileVault, LUKS, VeraCrypt

If the drive is physically working but the software layer is broken, we can still recover your data. Typical scenarios:

  • Formatted drive (quick or full format)
  • Accidentally deleted files and folders
  • Unsuccessful operating system reinstallation
  • RAW partition format
  • Ransomware-encrypted volumes (where a decryptor is available)
  • Corrupted filesystem structures (FAT, exFAT, NTFS, HFS+, APFS, ext4, XFS, ZFS, Btrfs)

Categories of drive damage

  • Logical / software damage — deleted or rewritten files, corrupted files, broken file system, formatted drive, lost partition table
  • Mechanical damage — primarily an HDD issue: read/write heads scratching the data platter, seized spindle motor, worn bearings, damaged actuator
  • Electronic damage — failed internal or external electronics: burnt-out PCB, damaged preamplifier, short-circuited controller

Most common causes of data loss

  • External factors — drive exposed to liquids, dusty environments, high temperatures, physical shocks (e.g. being dropped)
  • Software causes — application crashes during write, computer viruses, ransomware, RAW format, corrupted MBR or GPT sectors
  • Electrical causes — sudden loss of power, short circuit, failing power supply, lightning strike
  • Mechanical issues — most common on HDDs: problems with platters, read/write heads, actuator arm, spindle motor

How do I know my data is at risk?

  • You can’t access your data at all, or access is extremely slow
  • You can’t open a file which you previously opened without problems
  • A file can’t be moved, copied, or deleted
  • The operating system often freezes or crashes
  • Folders are full of strange data or unreadable names
  • Documents appear corrupted when opened
  • The PC doesn’t recognize the HDD or SSD at all
  • The operating system crashes as soon as you open a specific file
  • The PC or notebook makes strange sounds — clicking, grinding, beeping

If you are experiencing one or more of the above symptoms, contact us and we will help you. We will find the root cause and propose a solution. Upon your wish, your recovered data will be backed up to a new drive of your choice.

Important warnings

Warning 1: Data recovery is a professional craft. Please do not try at home. Non-professional data recovery attempts may cause permanent loss of all data — for example, opening an HDD outside a clean room leads to dust contamination and unrecoverable platter damage.

Warning 2: Despite all our efforts, we cannot guarantee 100 % success. Some damage scenarios (multiple severe platter scratches, firmware wiped by overwriting, chip-off with failed controller encryption keys) are physically unrecoverable. We will always tell you honestly if the case is hopeless — before any work is charged.

How do we do it?

We use data recovery in cases of hardware or mechanical damage to a data medium (HDD or SSD, SD card, flash discs, etc.). If the medium doesn’t work and a standard recovery path is not feasible, we always inform you about the next steps. After mutual agreement, we proceed — for example — with head replacement from a donor disk, PCB swap with ROM transfer, firmware repair via PC-3000 terminal, or chip-off on monolithic USB flash.

Our typical workflow

  1. Intake and NDA — we sign the standard order form and, on request, an individual NDA covering your specific case
  2. Free deep damage diagnostic — electrical checks, SMART reading in safe mode, PC-3000 terminal inspection, listening test (for HDDs), visual inspection under microscope
  3. Written quote — we tell you the expected price, time, and realistic success probability before any invasive work
  4. Recovery — imaging, head replacement in clean room, firmware repair, platter swap, controller bypass, chip-off — whichever the case requires
  5. Verification — we open recovered files in original applications (Office, AutoCAD, Photoshop, video codecs) to confirm they are usable, not just byte-level extracted
  6. Handover — encrypted delivery on a disk of your choice, or secure cloud transfer. Original drive returned or destroyed on request (certificate provided)

Categories of drive damage

  • Software / logical damage — deleting or rewriting files, corrupted files, broken file system, formatted drive, lost partitions
  • Mechanical damage — mainly an HDD issue: reading heads scratching the data layer, seized bearings, stuck actuator
  • Electronic damage — damage to the internal or external electronics of the drive — burnt PCB, blown TVS diodes, failed preamp, ESD on controller
  • Firmware damage — service area corruption, translator table loss, SMART module crash — disk is physically OK but „doesn’t see its own map"

Most common causes of data corruption

  • External factors — drive was exposed to liquids, dusty environments, high temperatures, physical shocks (fall from table, vibration during transport, drop on hard surface)
  • Software causes — crash of an application mid-write, computer viruses, ransomware, RAW format, corrupted MBR/GPT sector
  • Electrical causes — sudden loss of power supply, short circuit, failing power supply, lightning strike, plugging into wrong voltage region (e.g. 110 V device into 230 V socket)
  • Mechanical issues — most common are problems with moving parts of HDD (platter, reading/writing heads, actuator arm, spindle motor, voice coil)

How do I know my data are at risk?

  • I can’t access my data
  • I can’t open a file which I previously opened without problems
  • A file can’t be moved, copied, or deleted
  • Operating system often freezes or crashes
  • Folders are full of strange data, or full of zero-byte files
  • Documents are corrupted on open
  • PC doesn’t recognize the HDD/SSD
  • The operating system crashes while opening a specific file
  • PC or notebook makes strange sounds (clicking, grinding, beeping, whining)
  • BIOS/UEFI detects the disk but won’t boot
  • Disk appears with wrong capacity (e.g. 8 MB instead of 4 TB — controller lock)
  • SMART reports „imminent failure"

If you are experiencing one or more of the above, contact us and we will help you. We will find the core of the problem and solve it. Upon your wish, your data will be backed up to a chosen disk type.

Attention 1: Data recovery is a professional craft — please do not try at home. Non-professional recovery attempts may cause permanent loss of all data. Recovery software run against a failing disk amplifies mechanical damage with every read attempt.

Attention 2: Despite all our efforts, we cannot guarantee 100 % data recovery success. In cases of deep platter damage, multiple overwrites, or hardware-bound encryption with lost keys, the physical limits of the medium simply cannot be overcome.
