Photos on Mac: library won’t open

Photos on a Mac reports that the library cannot be opened. That still does not mean all photos are lost — but it also does not mean the problem is only in the database. What matters is to separate library availability, availability of the original image files, and the state of the disk. The repair tool belongs at the point in the process where you already have protected data and stable storage.

For a library that will not open or behaves unexpectedly, Apple offers Photos Repair Library. The tool examines the library database and fixes the inconsistencies it finds. It does not, however, replace a missing photo original, nor does it guarantee recovery of deleted content. Apple recommends backing up the library before running it.

First determine what is actually happening

Write down the full error message and when the problem started. Did the library stop working after being moved to an external disk? Are you opening the original library, or a different copy? Is only this application failing, or does copying other files from the same storage fail too? These answers are more useful than several more identical attempts to open the library.

Do not look for proof of a healthy disk merely in the fact that the Mac is running. The library may sit on a separate external medium that disconnects or returns read errors. Nor does a visible library icon in Finder prove that the entire contents can be read.

If you do not know which library you are using, resolve that question first — without deleting other copies. When handing the case over, you need to distinguish the original library, a working copy, and possibly an older backup. Label them by name and location, not by overwriting their internal files.

Protect the whole library

Photos stores the library in the Pictures folder of your home directory by default, unless you changed the location. In Finder you usually see an item with the .photoslibrary extension. Keep it as a whole; do not take its internal contents apart and do not try to fix the database by randomly deleting files.

With stable media and the application closed, make a copy onto other healthy storage with enough free space. Apple lists Time Machine, another backup solution, or a copy of the library to an external disk as backup options. Before repairing, verify that the backup actually exists and is accessible; a backup service merely being enabled does not prove it.

I/O errors, repeated interruptions, or the source disconnecting are the limit of this at-home branch of the process. Do not run a library repair as a substitute for failed backup attempts. Further reading and writing can burden a problematic medium, and you first need to decide how to safely get its contents out.

This is where DIY ends

Drive not responding, clicking or reporting errors? Stop trying anything else.

What not to try any more:

  • do not keep powering the drive on or reconnecting it,
  • do not run data recovery software, CHKDSK or formatting on the failing drive,
  • do not open or take the drive apart.

Non-standard cases (drive opened by another service, overwriting/formatting, complex analysis) cost 1 210 Kč including VAT (1 000 Kč excluding VAT) — we tell you in advance.

The library may not contain all the originals

With Optimize Mac Storage, when space on the Mac is limited, smaller local versions may be kept while full originals stay in iCloud. That is why the number of visible previews or a small library size is not a reliable inventory of the originals.

This has a practical impact on the backup: a successfully copied local library may not itself contain all the full image files. Record whether you use iCloud Photos, storage optimization, and which account the library syncs with. If the cloud originals are available, plan to retrieve and verify them separately on healthy storage with enough space — not through more attempts on a disk that keeps disconnecting.

Do not panic-change settings to „disable and delete" and do not delete cloud content. Before changing synchronization, you need to know which data is local, which is in the cloud, and what the selected option does. There is no universal rule that every switch-off of synchronization will by itself damage the library.

Repair on a stable Mac with a backup

Apple’s reference procedure starts with closing the Photos application. When you reopen it, hold down the Command and Option keys together. In the dialog that appears, choose Repair; the user account password may be required. The tool works on the database, so it is not a purely read-only diagnostic.

Before performing the step, verify the correct library and an available backup. If you have multiple libraries or a non-standard location, do not guess which one you are repairing. Follow the applicable Apple procedure for your configuration, or have the selection verified.

After completion, the library should open. Apple states that for a library used with iCloud Photos, a synchronization check follows. Do not evaluate the immediate item count as the only outcome; check the photos you need, time periods, albums, and important metadata. Do not disconnect a healthy disk during an in-progress repair.

What the outcome means

ObservationWhat it does NOT meanNext sensible step
Library openedThat all originals are completeVerify specific content and original availability
Some items missingThat the repair tool definitely deleted themCheck the correct library, backups, and iCloud
Repair did not helpThat the disk is necessarily faultyRecord the result and hand it over for assessment
Copy fails or disk disappearsThat it is safe to start writing a repairStop at-home attempts on the medium

Successfully opening a few shots is useful, but it is not a full archive check. If, for example, you need photos for a client job, verify the specific series and the resolution of the available copy. A preview that displays may not be a file suitable for the original purpose.

Materials for further assessment

Prepare the macOS version, the library location and name, storage type, the exact error message, and a timeline. State the backup status, iCloud Photos usage, and the outcome of any repair. If the issues involve an external disk, also describe the disconnecting and copy errors.

Hand over the original files and any available untouched copy, not just a library after several undocumented modifications. An account password or iCloud access is not an attachment to an initial public inquiry. A secure way of working with sensitive content is agreed separately with the authorized owner.

Frequently asked questions

Does a library error mean all photos are gone?

No. The message by itself does not distinguish between a database problem, storage availability, and missing originals. First preserve the library and determine the extent of the issue.

Can I start with a repair if no backup can be created?

Not as a safe first step. The repair writes to the library. Failing copies are a reason to assess the medium and your data protection approach, not to skip the backup.

Will Repair Library bring back a deleted photo?

It is not a promised feature for recovering deleted originals. The tool addresses database inconsistencies; missing content needs to be assessed based on available copies and storage condition.

Is a copy of a small library a backup of all full photos?

Not necessarily. With optimization enabled, full originals may remain in iCloud. Verify their actual availability separately from local previews and library size.

Should I delete older libraries so the app doesn’t get confused?

Not before verifying their contents and their relation to the current library. An older copy may be needed for assessment or may contain the version you are looking for. Identify and preserve them first.

If the library cannot be safely copied or the only important originals are missing, describe the state of your Mac and storage to ITHOPE. The next step will be determined from the specific materials; database repair and content recovery are two different questions.
