The short answer: First, determine whether you are dealing with a claim against the seller, Apple’s limited warranty, an AppleCare plan, or a purely out-of-warranty repair. These routes do not involve the same recipient or the same terms. If the device may still be covered, start by checking the proof of purchase and coverage status, then contact the seller or Apple Support. ITHOPE is an independent out-of-warranty repair service in Brno. It is not an Apple Authorised Service Provider and does not handle warranty repairs.
Four situations that are often confused
| Situation | First point of contact |
|---|---|
| rights arising from a purchase from the seller | the seller, based on the proof of purchase and claims terms |
| Apple Limited Warranty | Apple Support or the service route designated by Apple |
| active AppleCare | Apple, according to the specific plan and country |
| device outside coverage | a paid quote from an authorised or independent repair provider |
This table is not a legal assessment of any particular case. The proof of purchase, date, country of purchase, customer type, nature of the damage, and specific plan may all affect the outcome. Check your coverage status on Apple’s official website and consult your seller’s claims terms.
What Apple’s limited warranty for the Czech Republic says
Two points in the official terms of Apple’s one-year limited warranty for the Czech Republic will influence your decision more than anything else—and it is better to understand them before a repair than afterwards.
First: service outside the authorised channel is excluded from coverage. Under Apple’s terms, the warranty does not cover damage caused by service performed by anyone other than Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. This does not mean that opening the device automatically voids every right you have; it means that Apple coverage will not apply to specific damage connected with such work.
Second: the manufacturer’s warranty does not replace statutory rights. In the same terms, Apple expressly states that rights under the limited warranty supplement rather than replace statutory consumer rights, referring to the two-year period for reporting defects under § 2165 občanského zákoníku. These are therefore two separate routes, not one, and they are pursued against different parties.
The practical consequence is simple: as long as there is a chance that the case is covered, there is little sense in rushing to an independent repair provider. Conversely, once it is clear that coverage does not apply, there is no reason to wait for a response from the manufacturer.
This article is not a legal assessment. For devices purchased by a business, verify the terms against the specific contract and proof of purchase and, if necessary, consult a lawyer; a purchase made under an IČO may not be governed by the same rules as a consumer purchase.
AppleCare+ in the Czech Republic: why you cannot automatically rely on it
AppleCare+ is not officially sold in the Czech Republic. If you nevertheless have a plan, it was most likely purchased in another country—and is therefore governed by that country’s terms rather than the Czech offering. Before relying on the coverage, use Apple’s official coverage checker to confirm that the plan is active and determine exactly what it includes.
One point is worth knowing in advance: international AppleCare+ terms use 80% of the battery’s original capacity as the threshold below which battery replacement may be covered. Even then, the specific plan, its active status, and the type of incident remain decisive—no one should promise free service based solely on a single photograph or a figure shown in Settings.
You should therefore distinguish between three separate things that are commonly conflated in conversation: the manufacturer’s warranty, statutory rights arising from the purchase, and a paid service plan. Saying „it’s under warranty" does not identify which of these applies.
Why you should not start by taking the device apart
If you do not yet know whether the case is covered, first document the symptoms and the device’s external condition. Leave the device in a state in which the case can be assessed. An unqualified or unrelated intervention may not automatically remove all your rights, but it can make it more difficult to prove the cause and extent of the specific fault.
If the device has been dropped, exposed to liquid, or deformed, describe the circumstances honestly. The manufacturer’s warranty and a coverage plan may have different terms for accidental damage. No one should promise free service based solely on one photograph.
The same applies to a „quick repair by someone you know." A cheap, undocumented repair is the surest way to close off a covered route before you have even discovered that it was available.
How to verify the basic facts
Prepare the proof of purchase, exact model, serial number for privately checking the coverage status, a description of the fault, and the history of previous repairs. Apple allows you to identify a Mac model through the operating system, your account, or its serial number. For an iPad, use the model number because the product name alone may not identify the generation.
Do not post the full serial number in a public comment. Enter it directly on the official website or share it only with an authorised recipient.
Accuracy pays off here because the device’s age is usually the first useful indicator:
| Device | Typical year | What the decision usually depends on |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air M1 2020, MacBook Pro 13″ M1 2020 | 2020 | several years after sale; usually already an out-of-warranty case unless coverage was extended |
| MacBook Pro 14″ / 16″ M1 Pro and M1 Max | 2021 | the proof of purchase; the coverage boundary depends on the purchase date, not the manufacturing date |
| MacBook Air M2 and newer | 2022 onwards | for newer devices, it is always worth checking coverage before asking about price |
| 9th-generation iPad (A2602/A2604) | 2021 | often outside coverage in businesses; check who owns it |
| 10th-generation iPad (A2696/A2757) | 2022 | the proof and country of purchase matter, not the device’s appearance |
The years in the table are the models’ launch years, not the dates on which you purchased them. The date on the proof of purchase is always decisive.
What changes with an out-of-warranty repair
Outside coverage, you decide based on the diagnosis, price, type of part, expected outcome, and downtime. An independent repair provider should not be confused with an authorised service centre merely because it works on Apple devices or offers a particular type of part. The provider’s role should be clear in the quote.
ITHOPE accepts out-of-warranty hardware repairs of MacBooks and iPads after verifying the specific model. We do not promise a fixed public price or turnaround time without a diagnosis. If it appears that the device may still be covered, we will recommend following the appropriate warranty route first.
Company devices: who owns them and who makes the decision
With a company MacBook or iPad, there is an additional question that does not arise with a privately owned device: who is the owner? For a device obtained through leasing, a mobile carrier agreement, or a rental arrangement, the party entitled to make a claim may be someone other than the user—and that changes the service route.
Before handing over the device, clarify:
- Who owns the device and who is named as the buyer on the proof of purchase.
- Who may approve a paid repair and up to what amount.
- Whether the device is managed through MDM and who administers it.
- Where the proof of purchase is stored, so no one has to search for it while the device is out of action.
- Who is responsible for the backup and when it last completed successfully.
Work performed without the owner’s consent is the most expensive option of all—it combines the repair cost with the risk that no one at the company will approve responsibility for it.
A practical decision-making process
- Verify the device’s owner and proof of purchase.
- Identify the model and check its coverage status through a private channel.
- Describe the fault and circumstances without taking the device apart at home.
- For a covered device, contact the seller or Apple.
- Record who told you what and when—in a disputed case, this may be your only paper trail.
- For an out-of-warranty device, compare the written diagnostic findings and quote.
- Create and verify a backup before handing over the device.
- Ask for the quote to separate labour and parts, and confirm what will be different after the repair before approving it.
For a general comparison of repair value, see our article on when laptop servicing is worth it. Company ownership and approval processes are best handled as part of IT management.
If you have confirmed that the device is outside coverage, send us the model and fault details through Apple device servicing in Brno. We will first confirm whether the job falls within the scope of repairs we accept, then arrange the diagnosis and provide a quote for approval.
Frequently asked questions
Is ITHOPE an Apple Authorised Service Provider?
No. ITHOPE provides independent out-of-warranty hardware repairs within a confirmed scope. It does not handle warranty cases.
Does AppleCare automatically mean a free repair?
This cannot be stated as a general rule. It depends on the specific plan, its active status, the type of incident, and the applicable terms. Furthermore, AppleCare+ is not officially sold in the Czech Republic, so an existing plan will usually have been purchased in another country and will be governed by that country’s terms. Check the specific case with Apple.
Should I take a claim to the manufacturer or the seller?
It depends on which right or coverage you are invoking. For rights arising from the purchase, start with the seller; for an Apple warranty or plan, follow Apple’s process.
My 2020 MacBook Air M1 is out of warranty—where should I take it?
If you have confirmed that coverage has expired, it is an out-of-warranty case, and your decision should be based on the diagnosis, price, and type of part. Even so, we recommend checking the coverage status on Apple’s official website before taking the device anywhere; the purchase date is often different from the model’s launch year.
Will an independent repair make me lose all my rights?
Not automatically, but it is something worth considering in advance. Under Apple’s terms, the limited warranty does not cover damage caused by service performed outside Apple and its authorised network. Statutory rights arising from the purchase are a separate route, and under the same terms the manufacturer’s warranty supplements rather than replaces them. However, assess your particular case based on the proof of purchase and contract, not on an article.
